Centreing Layers in PS

Is there a way of centreing a layer without using the X & Y co-ord?s. I want to record an action that includes the layer being centred.

The X & Y co-ord?s don't record as I would expect. The action records the distance a layer moves in the X & Y directions, rather than its X & Y position.

If a layer starts in a different position than that used to record the action, it moves the same distance in the X & Y direction, not to the same position I typed in the X & Y boxes when recording (which is daft, in my view).

Any ideas!

I know, it is rather frustrating!

The way round it I came up with was something along these lines...

Select background layer (can't remember if you have to make it layer 0 instead of a locked layer for this to work).

Link the layer you want centred.

Go to Layer menu - align centred horizontally, and then again for align centred vertically. That sticks it in the middle of the page.

If you then want to have a position other than centred, you can move it from there, and it will remember it in relation to the centred position.

Does that make sense?!?!

I had that brainwave last night. Believe it or not, it does exactly the same as the X & Y co-ord's when recorded as an action. The distance it moves towards the center is recorded, not the position to which it moves....Crazy!

Thanks for posting though. Will have to keep working on this one. :(

PS...I'm using PS 7, so maybe I'm getting different results if your using CS?

Solved this one now. :righton:

If I center to a selection (Select/All), using the Align buttons on the property bar, it doesn't record. If I use the same buttons in the Layer menu, it records perfectly...Strange!
