Color Balance help

When I use color balance, I lose some of the darkness of the original shadows of the image. How can I use the tool without loosing the contrast of the shadows?
 
Try to darken the image before messing with colors.
Or, adjust the sliders for shadows specifically.
I hope you're using an adjustment layer. If not, do it. C'mon, do it. Bacardi and adjustment layer.
