Creating 3D hole effect on wooden texture

Hallo,
I have a wooden texture and I would like to create a smooth 3d dug-out holes effect like in the image below:

mancala.jpg

I am only interested in the normal holes and not the long ones. I would like the same effect that one would get when rendering a muffin baking tray with holes, for instance. How can I get this effect in Photoshop(or am I better off doing it using another program? - if that is the case - which program??). I have Photoshop CS6.

Thanks in advance.

Start with the picture of the wooden board
make the roundish elipse shape with the selection tool, copy
ctlr-shift-n> fill selectionc
ctrl-shift-n> paste
ctlr-alt-g
liquify to make the wood grain curve
re-adjust the position of the layer
ctrl-shift-n>add shadows and highlights with a soft brush

That's pretty close colleague! The hard part is getting the wood texture to curve to the bowel shape.

Thanks a lot for all the replies. This is a great forum!
Thanks Hawkeye for the emboss/bevel idea. Collleague, your rendition looks really good.
Any ideas how to make the grains of the hollow wooden hemispheres also curve?

I will post my attempt soon.

cant you just use the liquify tool and maybe in there use the pinch or bloat tool on quite a large brush failing that I am sure the forward warp tool with some patience will do the job if the pinch/bloat tool is not a good result only meant as a quick fix
