Creating Roost/Particles

Hi all,

Looking for some techniques on creating - either close to or even stylized - roost or particle sprays. I've attached a couple of examples of what I'm talking about. I do some editing for posters of the motocross photos I take and I find that creating a spray of dirt like in the photos to be very difficult. I would love to hear any particle techniques or suggestions on this - maybe there is a plugin or filter that would help. Stylized or abstract would be fine as well.

I would think that using PS for this it would be best to look for and use some specific Grunge Brushes.
You'd find brushes with the best looking particle 'sections' in them, apply the brush on a new layer using the desired colour, then erase the areas of the brush you don't want to be a part of the image/effect. You can add a little 3d-ish effect using the emboss filter gently.

Try that and let me know if you still need help/ideas.

PS: You can find tons of grunge brushes free online using Google. ;)

Be sure to check out any Photoshop Brush techniques utilising Scatter, Jitter and the Brush Dynamics settings. Then with three or four layers, you can create some really solid particle visuals.
