oh and in answer to the ops original post if you make your selection then select the square marquee tool hover your cursor inside the selection you will see a small rectangle appear next to your cursor you can then click and drag your selection without moving any pixels but you can only move that selection so if you wanted to fill the selection you would choose a tool like painbrush or bucket fill it with desired colour then select the marquee tool again and move selection to new place and fill
or just do what I said in previous post then grab paint bucket tool and fill over each instance of your shape with whatever colour you want
