hi. i have been working on this fire technique found Here
everything is fine till i get to 6a and 6b. the liquify dialog and warp tool. try as i might, i cannot replicate this effect with PS CS. if you look to the video of the tute, the warp tool doesnt want to work that easily. any suggestions?

Try using the smudge tool instead. It works very much the same way.

AHA!!! thats the trick, works a lot better. will post results this weekend when i can get a chance to play with it.

thanks.

You'll find a lot of redundancey among the tools. If something doesn't work for you, you usually can find a good substitute by poking around. I look forward to seeing your results.

heh. forgot to post back ;\
this is a test i did. currently working on a site banner incorporating the fire text effect.

The flame shape looks good but it needs some orange added to the flame, it seems to me. Perhaps you wanted a total yellow, though...

i think the tutorial was written for PS6 or 7. not sure of the difference in versions, but my troubles with the colour begins when i merge the red and yellow flame layers together. i am using CS (8).

i am still a newb [shhh]

Hey species, I remember doing that tute a while ago and I thought it was pretty easy to follow. I think just going through it step-by-step and follow the directions exactly would produce the results your looking for.

If you have the layers set at a different blend mode (other than normal) then when you merge them it will revert back to 'normal'. Just set it back to the previous blend mode.
Also, the author makes a big point about using the liquify tool instead of the smudge tool...I think you should use his advice.
Here's what I came up with when I did it (think it was almost a year ago)

I'm glad that for once, somebody points to the original tutorial. It has been ripped off so many times, and the copies are far from having as many tips as Greg's version. There is no difference between 7 and cs or CS2 that would give other results.

i have seen some others but the one i linked is by far the best. you can tell some of the other tutes rip off the original..as far as the text anyway.
i am sort of a speed reader and missed "colour dodge".

Reading comprehension is good. I know what you mean cause I've skipped over words before too. It's amazing - if you even skip over one word in you can get something totally different that what the person really meant or end up with weirdo tute results. All it takes, though is just the extra couple seconds to see if you got the steps right.
