You can set the layer to multiply as Sprusemagoo1 said,

Or you can can go into your channels panel, then ctrl + click (cmd + click on the Mac) on any of the channels (assuming the image is black and white and they all look as the image you provided)

Doing this will create a selection around the white pixels, then invert the selection, go back to your layers panel, create a new layer and fill it with black, or whatever color you like.

Doing it this way gives you the flexibility to make the head different colors and you can apply filters and styles without worrying about affecting the rest of the image.

hope it helps!

thanks, guys.
i just couldn't figure it out using blending modes as i tried it before...
channels selection did pretty good job, even though i'll probably use
good old refine edge (with some edges burn/later highlight) as it is the
fastest way and i dont have to bother making b/w masks.

Go to blending options. Go down to "blend if" and move the "this layer" right hand, white slider to the left until the white is gone but the black is not compromised. Alt/opt click on the triangle to split it in half and move them around separately if it helps.

pretty fine. i'll play with it later on some more.
today i'm on the tight schedule
