Help! Trying to create a pain glow on a skeleton an X-ray image

Hi All,

I've spent a couple of days reading tutorials on layer styles, glow effects, gradients and color dodging and I've tried to experiment a little but I'm just not getting the look I want.

What I'm trying to do is I have an image of an X-ray skeleton like the one below except it does not have that glow effect in it which depicts pain. I am wondering how I can create that type of glow effect where the edges of the bone glow a little more white and then it goes from yellow to red like in this photo below.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Layers is the simply way, this is very rough but you get the idea with yours you will need more layers for more edge effects.

Thanks for your reply Paul. That's the part I'm having a hard time with -- I can't figure out how to make the edges white like they are in that photo and then go to yellow then red. I'm sorta getting there by creating a gradient on another layer then setting it to "lighten," but the blue part of the bones still shows too much and I need to soften that part.

Here's how I achieved it ...

1. Create a new layer on top of the original image.
2. Use brush tool and use white color to make a small round dot. - Yes, just a dot.
3. Right click -> blending options and use Outer glow. Select color red and acrieve the range/size according to the area you want to lit up.
3. duplicate this layer. The glow would multiply further.
4. now select the layer below with red outer glow.
5. again goto blending option -> outer glow and select the yellow color. Adjust the range/spread as desired.

To make the above effect, select the two 'dot layers' and free transform to make a vertical line.
