Help with my failed attempt; trying to desperately learn

Hello! No trolling please, I just really want a nice progress photo. So I'm a complete Photoshop newbie (back in the day we use basic Corel and now I just use Paint to patch images etc). Basically my goal is to remove the distracting elements from the picture and also the flourescent light at the back (please see my messy attempt VS original photo) and adjust lighting etc then crop square. I'd really like some pro help. Can someone fix this please? I'd really appreciate it. Also, I'm planning to take up PS classes by December so I now frequent forums such as this for inspiration. You guys know of promo codes or where to buy latest original PS that maybe gives discounts? Thank you so much!
