Hello

I am aware of the commercial programs/plug-ins that convert your photos into "paintings".

However, these products produce pretty severe effects that tend to create a very cliched look.

I was hoping someone could explain to me how to produce a more subtle "oil painting" effect for my photographs.

I have attached two images that more-or-less shows what i am looking for.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Honestly a good plugin will suit you be best I reccomend Topaz simplify or alien skin Snap art
However with Simplify you can ge full control has an oil painting preset and you can make it not noticable or a full blown watercolour. here is an example of a photo I thook this morning of a black swan sorry have no portraits on my computer to demonstrate but as you can see it is very subtle adjustments.

But if you dont want to buy a plugin you could combine any of the artistic filters on low settings.

However the pics you have provided are probably painted by hand in photoshop using a real portrait as a gude and reference.
