How to add background to text?

I just typed in the text I want and want to add a grey background in the textbox behind the typed words. The "Fill" in the Edit isn't in bold and I can't open the Fill dialog box. How do I add background?

What you should do is use the Custom shapes tool and create the box then create the text inside the box

You could probably also create a new layer, fill that layer in, and then put that layer underneath the text.

I can draw the box, but the fill color is always black. How do I chose the color?

You could probably also create a new layer, fill that layer in, and then put that layer underneath the text.

Thanks for the tip on creating a new layer. This was the first time I did that and it proved quite valuable because I could mess up and then get rid of my mistakes. (I am new)

It took me 30 min just to find the Custom shapes tool by selecting the Rectangle tool first. LOL.

And then I didn't like the border it put around the only shape that looked like a text box. And once again, how do I chose a fill color? The Rectangle tool gave me a nice text box, but how did I fill the box with a solid color? I would like a light Grey most times.

Well for vector image there is two ways,
ONE On the layer thumbnail you should see a color with a slider, double click that and a color dialog box should pop up; OR simple do a Layer Style
