How to deselect?

I'm having a hard time figuring out how to deselect part of an image. When I use the magic wand to select the white background it includes part of the thumb nail. How do I deselect the white part of the thumb nail so I don't remove it with the background?

Thanks!:)

If I understand right, you mean a real thumb nail on a person? not a thumb nail image? if you mean like on a hand, when you select the magic wand, at the top of the page there is a tool options thing ( I don´t have English photoshop so I can´t remember what it´s called) anyway, at the far left there chould be 4 squarish options, if you hover your mouse over them they will tell you what they are, you should click on "remove from selection" and then click with the wand on the part you don´t want.

I hope this doesn´t sound too confusing lol :)

Please post the image so we can give you accuate info. If the white of the background and the nail overlap you probably can't make the selection with the magic wand at least not quickly anyways. . If they don't, try selecting the contiguous box as an option for the magic wand.

If you have a selection and want to remove part of the selection hold down the Alt key (Opt on the Mac) while using the selection tool.
To add to a selection use the Shift key instead.

yeah what Steve says except if you want an easier time use the magic wand then swap to quick selection tool where you can make finer tweaks
