How To get this effect??

If the original is appropriate, the quickest way to get close would be NIK's Color Efx Pro package: First, their Bleach Bypass effect. Next, one of their toning effects (eg, "ink"). Both would have to be modified from their default settings. Obviously, this could also be achieved using only the tools native to PS, but that requires much more experience because there are so many options for each step.

The easiest (and most convincing) way to show that a proposed technique generates the intended effect is by a concrete example. Why don't you post a suitable starting image and we'll see what we can do with it.

good idea...

here is a photo that I'd like to edit with that effect...Senza titolo-1.jpg

Since i'm not that prepared enough with photoshop, a step-by-step "tutorial" would be great!!

That's very bad lighting! Plus the band in the first image have been super imposed onto that background.

Have you not got a lighter image, it would make things a lot easier for you!

Ditto what the previous two posters said: Unfortunately, that's just not an appropriate photo to start from to get that effect.

More specifically, not only is that image dreadfully underexposed, but the background is darker than the subjects instead of lighter as was the case for the image you cited. To make matters worse, the darkness of the background varies all over the place from jet black to a dark crimson tone. These problems may be easier for you to see in a lightened version of your image.

I totally agree with that Tom (may I call you Tom, lol?). I tried playing around with it and the lack of light in the photo makes it hard to compare it to the other. There is already a hard contrast (bright overhead and frontal lighting) in the original photo that helps to get the outline effect you're looking for bassman.

But you can still get part of the way by increasing the brightness in levels or curves; increasing contrast, playing with desturation, overlaying original, untouched layer maybe, trying some effects. Like Tom said, a lot of different ways and a lot of steps for someone with minimal experience.

@ibc - I certainly don't see any reason you shouldn't call me, "Tom". People have called me a lot worse.. It's a pleasure to meet you.

@OP - I'm hesitant to even show this given that it doesn't look anything like what you really want, but here's the direction Bleach Bypass and Toning (using the NIK plugins) take the brightened version of your image. Again, you have to develop an eye for exactly what constitutes a good starting image for such manipulations.

PS - Pls. excuse the lousy, 5 second masking job  .

HTH,

Tom M

I'm no expert or anything, but the toning effect created in the first image has the best outcome on images with really good lighting, so you can take advantage of all the highlight, lowlights and mid tones. Unless the effect is created with the camera, noise in the image will look hideous with these effects, so a decent quality camera and lighting are required if you want a decent image.

This is as close to it as I can get.

It also looks as if this jpeg has been compressed multiple times. For a large size image at a resolution of 240, it should be much better. It may also be that someone resized a lower res img and the quality doesn't carry. Look at the right eye on the woman. Scary. Similar on the left hand guy if not as bad. And everything is too grainy which also makes it difficult to apply adjustment and filter effects.

:deadhorse:

I'm done, XD.

PS: nicely done Chad!

@ibc - You are absolutely right about the compression artifacts and noise. I used Topaz de-JPG on the OP's image before I did anything else to it. Without it, there were JPG blocks all over the place once you brightened it up.

Also, I love the "beating a dead horse" avitar. I'm new on this forum and haven't yet explored all the little goodies (like the "more" avitars) link.

Cheers,

Tom M

The detail has been compromised to get that effect, and also maybe a Led Zeppelint-shirt, instead of Kiss, would look more legit IMO.:rocker:
