How to use clone tool?

I combined a bunch of photos together of different rockscapes I found that I want to build for a reef tank.

I want to make the areas around the rock/corals on the left and right sides look like the middle, how do I do this? The clone tool is not working for me.

Do you mean you want to get rid of the backgrounds on the non-middle images, so you can arrange them and put one common background across them all that looks like the middle one?

I would select foreground, make mask, invert it and then clone. What process did not work for you ?
