I tried to do a similar thing with one of my photos but it didn't turn out the same way.

We can make educated guesses as to how this was created. We can go into PS and make something with similar if not identical effects. We can tell you what we did and it is likely everyone will describe a different method. One of the amazing things about PS is the many ways there are to do things, even ways to use a certain tool. I don't think you are really ready to make this kind of thing. Doesn't mean you can't have fun trying by following instructions; it is a very good way to learn. Then learning your way through a lot of PS and being able to recognize at least some of the steps to recreate something is fun. And better than that is experimenting to make your own unique effects.

You said you want to learn about masks and good chance masks are used in the creation of this image. If you go to the search field and enter layer mask, you will find entries that will answer a lot of your questions. You can also google this. I suggest you start here because there is a lot to learn on this topic. There are some basics however that will get you started.

Then you can post questions on the forum that are more specific and will likely get you better and quicker results.

That's the thing - I hoped to put in my photo, spend a bit of time messing with effects and texture and coming out with something similar.
And because of the contrast in the Roy Batty picture, the luminosity of the dove etc, all make it a better photo to work with than mine. So alas, with hand-painting totally out of my range, I'll have to settle for something less.

Now that the Easter holidays are over, hopefully have a bit of time to do a bit of photoshopping again.


Very kind offer ibclare, I'm going to try and watch the tutorial and get the masks thing nailed before I try anything else.
