I need an svg file

What does the error text say? Can you provide a screenshot of the same?

You should even be able to right click and export as SVG even when it is just is a Text Layer
I agree with @polarwoc that more details on the error would help as well as a screen shot of the export panel with the parameters you have chosen.
Knowing the PS version as well as the OS type/version might be helpful
Does not sound like a PS problem as it should work.
You could always try restarting PS and/or resetting PS preferences too

kind of got it to work. When I made a new file, it defaulted to Grayscale. I made a new file as RGB. I did have to convert to Shape. Then it would export as SVG. It came in to Blender with a few issues. Sure I can get the Blender gurus to help me out. Thanks for your help.
