Practice with the pen tool these are good pictures to learn on. It would take anyone a bit of time to do it correctly

Yeah, I agree with you iDad, it will not be a quicky, but will look great.

If you want it quick...with a few leftovers, use quick select and refine edge, output it to a mask, then plan on cleaning up your mask to remove the leftovers...Sorta like a toothpick after a good steak.....

I agree on the pen tool; it is the cleanest way and doesn't involve much edge refinement if you stay within the border of your subject.

You can use other selection tools like quick select, etc. You still want to zoom in when you use that tool so you can see the more gross errors and correct those before going to refine edge/mask. When you go to refine edge on a selection, the first thing is to change the background preview color so it will show you the halos.

In this case you might want to use white. Depending on what color background or if you will use a background the cleanup is more or less crucial. So if your players will be placed on a very dark background, a black halo will be less apparent. If you want to clean it up regardless, generally use the smooth edge but not too much or you'll get a blurry halo after all. The smart radius is not for this kind of extraction as it will replace bits of the subject such as wispy hair and not much help to you. Use the contract edge till you get rid of most of the bg then apply a mask. With the mask you can zoom in along the edges and paint with black to remove parts of the background or use white to put some of the subject back in.

I hope this helps.

Open up your background eraser tool (on the eraser flyout) Set it about 10 size , click the double eyedroppers, set the Limits to find edges and about 20% tolerance. Choosing Protect Foreground is optional but helpful, but you have to change the foreground color as you go along (use eyedropper). That might be a little simpler for you if your not familiar with how to use the pen tool to do selections just yet.
