Lightening up a background

I use photoshop CS4 and have taken a couple individual photos of a hockey player on the ice. The hockey player is perfect but the background is so dark. How do I go about changing it to a lighter shade (actually REALLY lighter)
Thank you for any replies. (really must work on doing this in camera!!!:banghead:)

We need to look at the picture in order to advise you what to do. Please use the 'green icon' and post image here
 
Sight unseen, I can only guess. You probably need to select your player using any of a number of selection tools. Make another layer, do the selection and delete the BG or mask it off. Masking is good because you can fix your edges or refine the mask. You can also refine a selection. (plenty of tuts if you google refine selection in Photoshop.

Then you have your player separate from the BG and you can you any number of adjustment layers to lighten it, levels, curves, whatever you find works best for you. I would suggest trying more than one so you get the hang of it.

Like the others said, post your image so we get an idea of the complexity or simplicity of the problem.
 
Just show us !... Clare did go thru the basics, although there are many different ways to go.
