Hi everyone... looking for some advice to see if there is a more technical way of doing something... please

Basically... when wanting to use photos and have them inside a shape such as an oval or other different shape, after resizing them, is there anyway to erase the bits of the photo which are not needed, yet pertrude beyond the lines of the shape or object on the layer above?

The above layer needs to have an outline, i.e. a star, or an oval, which will then act as a kind of border... so the middle of that object is hollow, allowing for the picture on the layer below to be seen, but have the border over the top.

At the moment, i am just zooming in and getting the eraser tool, and erasing round the shape, but it doesnt seem very technical. Just to improve my own technique, wondered if there was a more technical way of doing this.

Many thanks.
