Hi folks

I have banners to design 4 feet by 8 feet.
Getting confused about resolution and dimensions.

Should I keep same dimensions like 48 inch by 96 inch with 300 dpi. Tried to do it but the file size was going about 10+ GB.

What should be right approach. The file will go to professional printer for vinyl banners.

then Yes keep it at 300 DPI you may want to do it in illustrator as it makes lot smaller file sizes and you can just enlarge it at the end so it works fast while designing.

Hi Hoogle, thanks for your response.
With jobs like this, do you think quarter of an inch as bleed should be fine?
And one more thing, you have said about 300dpi but did not mention if keeping the same dimensions in AI would also be required or not?

well the beauty of illustrator is you can make a vector design at 5 inces by 5 inches and then when it is done resize it all to 10 feet by 10 feet with no loss of resolution to the image.

As for bleed you need to check with your printers and what they reccomend.

Thanks Hoogle. I guess resizing thing will be true as long as there is no raster image used inside AI design. Am I right?
I understand from your response re bleed that it varies from printer to printer. I am not sure if my understanding about bleed is correct or not that it adds cost to the print job. So if we talk proportionally, normal size jobs have 1/8" as bleed so I was wondering what would happen to bleed size if the jobs are huge like 10x10ft as you said (e.g. a bleed of 6 inch for a 10x10ft job :)). Sorry to bother you 2nd time but I think its better if I clarify a few more things using this opportunity.

the bleed size shouldnt be that much larger than if it was A4 sized paper the bleed is the ink and the material it is printed on so paper would be less than vinyl etc. You need to to speak to your printers and see what they suggest as they know there ink and materials.
