Mysterious pinstripes from nowhere!

Okay, I already did a search for my issue and didn't come up with anything exactly like it (the nearest thing I found was the issue of color banding, but I don't think that's it) so I'll go ahead and ask about it.

I have a problem. A problem with pinstripes.

Not like the pinstripes you deliberately create for a funky-fresh wallpaper, but ones that just pop in out of nowhere while you're working with a layered file and mess everything up. Depending on what layer effects I use, I sometimes get this weird pinstripe ghost effect, or blocky patches of pinstripes. It's the most noticeable when I use the Multiply layer effect and set the opacity to anything less than 100%. I've tried fiddling with the color settings, but to no avail. The effect is very visible on the saved files as well, so it's not just while I've got PS open:

The weird thing is, I not only get this weird effect on my (32-bit) XP desktop computer, but also on my laptop PC that runs (32-bit) Vista. When I use the newest version of PS at my university, that effect simply does not happen. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling PS7, but that didn't fix it. My copy is legitimate, but it's (obviously) quite old. So...I dunno. It's weird and baffling. :banghead:

Any thoughts, guys?

i dont know if you have lost hope on this thread or not but here is a wild thought, in the color selection box is the "web colors only" box checked

Hmm, no, that doesn't do anything. It's odd, because if I slide a pallet or some other window over it, it effects the pinstripes. So, something to do with the rendering, maybe? O.o

okay, one thing you didnt mention what version of photoshop are you using, i mean you said you are using PS7 but like PS7.0 or 7.1 or 7.0.1.
