So I was using photoshop to brush stuff and the paint brush tool wasn't working properly. The brush tool would sort of just drag the image and streak it. The attachment function isn't working properly at the moment, so here is a link to the screenshot.

Please take a look. Notice the distortion of the image especially around the hair and face? If you know what's happening please, let me know. I'm assuming it's a driver issue with my graphics card but that is only a guess. I'm trying to get some input (and hopefully even a solution) :). Thank you!

Edit: Just a note, I tried this in Photoshop 7 as well as CS3, and it happened in both versions.

Is this by any chance a large scanned in .tiff file?

Is the destination for this file the web or print?

Any who you might have a really huge file size, but at any rate you need to be doing all your editing on a different layer. Don't paint directly to the background layer.

Google 'create new layer in photoshop' if you're not sure how.

Ah, I tried that too, painting over the image on a new layer, but the same problem. I don't think it's an issue with Photoshop itself.. more of a PC problem, but it is affecting my PS' performance. Was wondering if anyone encountered the same issues.

I am also a pc technician and taught pc repair just last semester before transferring over to work on the web site and graphic design so I might be able to assist. I've seen the error you're mentioning but it was a long time ago and a RAM error, and sometimes those RAM errors can be because the file is HUGE - like a tiff.

If you want help please let us know the following:

PC stats: (right click on my computer go to properties) let us know 1. how much RAM you have. 2. What OS you're running. 3. Then open My Computer and tell us how full your Hard drive is (could be a swap problem).

Also the type of file you have open - does it happen on only that file or all files?

Try other brushes - is it one particular brush or all?

thx -7

PC stats: (right click on my computer go to properties) let us know
1. how much RAM you have.
2.2 GHz, 2.00 GBs of RAM

2. What OS you're running.
Windows XP

3. Then open My Computer and tell us how full your Hard drive is (could be a swap problem).
178 GBs free space out of 230 GBs. (I reformatted less than a month ago)

The files I was trying to paint over are .jpg & .bmp files.

Try other brushes - is it one particular brush or all?
It happens with all brush types, though some to a lesser extent. It's mainly the spray paint and regular circular type brushes that cause the most pixelation/distortion/smearing.

And thanks ahead of time for trying to help. Really appreciate it.

Okay Pete - your computer sounds like it should handle everything (congrats! It's not a bucket!)

Right click on My Computer, choose Manage

Click on Device Manager - are there any big yellow question mark or exclamation marks especially beside display adapters, montiros etc?

Did this problem just start and you use to use Photoshop just fine, or did you just install Photoshop and notice it bugging?

My thought is that perhaps when you reloaded Windows a driver was missed.

Here are some items to check...

Edit > Preferences
Drop down and check your Memory and Image Cache size - mine is set to 55%
My cache level is set to 6
Check your brushes preset - make sure there isn't any strange settings in your brushes

When it does this - does your computer also lag and seem not to respond or is it just the brush.

Do you have any brushes installed - anything custom? I would temporarily take out all custom brushes (Program Files > Adobe Photoshop > Presets>Brushes) be sure to leave at least one set in there and restart photoshop to see if it fixes it.

If you can't find anything at all wrong - you might have to reinstall.

Regards, 7

No, all the drivers were reinstalled after reformatting.

I used to use photoshop just for image resizing and cropping, so I never noticed this problem, prior to the reformat. I just reinstalled it last night, and fiddled with the paintbrushes and noticed. (I wanting to learn graphic designs and such.) So I'm honestly not sure whether this problem was here before the reformat, or if it came after.

That was my guess too, but the driver seems to be there. I re-updated it just incase and the problem persists.

Yep, default settings for memory is 55% and cache level is 6.

It's just the brush strokes that smear. The computer's speed runs smoothly.

I didn't download any brushes from 3rd party sites, no. There's only those 12 batches of brushes inside the folder.

Hmm... I notice the smears are a lot more severe when I paint slowly (move the cursor slowly). When I make quick movements, the smears are very slight. I don't think reinstalling will do anything. I seriously installed CS3 only a few hours ago. It's as default as can be ^^;;

If you're out of guesses, thanks for attempting to help :). Least we're narrowing down the options.
