Need help with creating logo

I would like to create a logo for the band I am playing in. I would like to make it similar to the logo of Line6 (attached to this topic). Could you give me some tips for creating such a logo in Photoshop?

Yeah. Don't.

Photoshop is not a good place to design a logo. A logo should be able to be printed in any size, used for any application and recognizable in 1-bit color. The program most suited to doing that would be Illustrator.

As for that particular shape, I would draw the outline with the pen tool (or just use primatives and the pathfinder in Illustrator). Then draw the blacked out part with the pen tool. Then place the text using the text tool. Place a texture and you're done.
