Yes make a selection of the black dial then use a levels adjustment layer.

I used the red channel to make the selection, use the method your most comfortable with.

I wouldn't use the marquee tool for that personally, but you need to select the dark area of the face of watch whichever way you are most familiar with.

yeah lol i meant the lasso tool. basically this is what i do... i go around the dial with the lasso tool till its fully around the dial > then i go to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>LEVELS> and then you selected the red from the "channel:" correct?

btw the layers have always confused me, like i see in your picture you have a layer made. and i did your steps now without making the layer i think it looks the same. my question is whats the point of making the layer to begin with?

No I used the red channel to make a selection.
1. Go to channels and duplicate the red channel.

2. Now use levels on the channel like this

3. Using your brush tool paint out with white the remaing area that you don't want effected.

4. Invert the Channel

5. Control click the new channel and enable the rgb channel. Notice the marching ants to highlight the selection of just the black face.

6. New Layer Via Copy

7. Levels adjustment on the new layer. Taylor this step to your liking.

for some reason if you look at my layers they differ from yours... I did your steps the same way you wrote to maybe there was some steps you left behind before the "Go to channels and duplicate the red channel."?

The difference is you made a new layer then modified it with your selection. That is perfectly fine. To get my result was to make the new layer via copy then modify it. What that does is only copies the area that is in the marching ants. Both work.
