Hi,

I'm relatively new to photoshop but am aware of a few of the main components and ins and outs of the program - enough for myself to get my so far at least with simple tasks. So I'm now studying Graphic Design and there's a lot of photoshop involved. I was looking at some past students blogs and noticed some really impressive design work (in my eyes)...for instance this work here>

Obviously there's a whole lot to doing doing this sort of stuff, but how... ? : ) Where do people find the inspiration for such good looking design work that looks so neat and professional? This is how I'd like to present some of my work.

I guess I just want to know how really. Are there some tutorials or something out there that will teach me how to do stuff like that? Im currently running Photoshop CS6 on a Macbook Pro alongside all adobe creative programs. Thanks

I got this stupid habit of posting the same answer for every inspiration question but i can’t simple explain it in a different way so..
Quote of myself from different post ;]

"There is nothing new under the sun" and "good artists copy great artists steal"

Browse the web for inspirational websites like : http://www.fromupnorth.com/ or http://abduzeedo.com/. save all the designs you like and mix them.
Choose object from one of them, pattern from the other, style of the third, composition of forth..etc.. And create your own design. It will be unique because your own style will add to that. and.. Try to make it better ;)

Create flow charts: Sun - light- bright - energy - happiness - smile..Your thought process will take you places you never expected.

Create fake customer in your head. Thing about what he want. What is the purpose of the design? Who supposed to like it? What kind of message supposed to be behind it? What kind of feeling its suppose to create? Excitement? Happiness? Happiness – energy – bright- Sun. Maybe Sun in a good idea for the main theme? There is a cool sun picture in your saved files. Looks awesome but it would be better with style from the other one.

Doodle. On paper and digitally. Open Photoshop, create a rectangle, copy it 10 times, move them around, skew them, play with filters , textures, blending mode etc. 9 on 10 results will suck but one on the will be interesting. Remember how you did it and use it later on. You will create your own style and eventually there will have no time to put all ideas in your head into action

Remember that this is a marathon, not a sprint
Good Luck

Thanks for your reply. Yeah that all makes sense. You say good designers and artists etc steal ideas from others - this makes a good artist. But when say with photoshop - to what extent should graphic designers be actually creating all these patterns, styles, layouts from scratch? Is it completely Ok to simply see a style you like on the net - save it, cut around it and place it on a layer on photoshop then play round with it? Thanks again

whichever is the most cost efficient way to get the result you need :3

Assuming that no copyright infringement...et al.

Ethics aside....in the word of art / images...they all have been done, you need a new look for the old ideas....that what makes them "New and Fresh"...color, placement....imagine!

About the steeling. You will know. There is no way you will not be aware when you crossing the line between inspiration ans simple steeling. You can always feel it, the question is if you gonna act on that. And about "creating all these patterns, styles, layouts from scratch" i think it comes with time. The more you in to it, the more things you will create yourself. First for fun and the feeling that you made everything from the scratch and then when you get familiar with tools its simply faster to make your own stuff and its always better. The one you will find are not always perfect for your project. And then again the moment when you know for sure that you could easily make that style yourself , you stop feeling bad about spending 5$ on 100 styles package.Using them doesn't feel bad anymore, its just a time saver. start contributing to community. make brushes and patters ad other stuff, sell some, give some away for free , become part of community and you will catch the feel of good and bad ;]
