I really want to make similar stripe, i've got nice shape, but blue colour

without those effects is ugly...

If someone knows how can I make this stripe please, i beg You - help :) I don't

want You to make it for me, it is too much for a guy whom You don't even know,

but if someone could write what should i do i would be veeery grateful.

Thanks in advance

Pen Tool to create the shape, then convert path to selection to stylize.

Hiya Omnium_Gatherum and how's Palliser doing these days? ;)

Anyway, you say that you have a nice shape already? nitrobutler is right that a shape like that is easily created with the Pen tool. However, once you have the shape, how to get the shading?

I'm not exactly positive how that person did it. Perhaps it was painted by a skilled hand and a Wacom tablet.

The highlighting and shadow work could have been done with the Dodge and Burn tools, using feathered selections to constrain the effects to the specific areas desired.

I'm nearly positive that it wasn't created using styles as the shading is too uneven.

Try experimenting by creating your shape filled with color and using the Dodge Tool to create the highlight and the Burn tool to create the shadows. That might get a good result fairly simply.

If I were doing it I wouldn't use the dodge and burn tools. I would make the shapes of the highlights and shadows then blur them and mess with different blend modes. For the base of the shape I would use layer styles though. Here's a quicky that I did and the layer style I used.

Looks great,p?tr??k. :righton:

My initial suggestion was based on the observation that in the original image the shading was rather irregular so it seemed to me it had to be done by hand. ;)

I agree. The original was shaded by hand but I love what you did, patrick. :}

I am having trouble understanding Omnium_Gatherum's question. Does he want to know how to make the blue shape or does he want to know how to make the whole piece?

Thanks, Moth.
The orig was probably done by hand, but for me to do it that way, I think I would end up buying a new keyboard because the crtl, alt, and z key would have worn out. [confused] And as I said before, It was a quicky, so there plenty room for improvment.

Here's a quicky take on the stripe. Basically, I started everything as a bunch of rectangles, shaded on one side, highlighted on the other. Then I tranformed/perpespective to make one end smaller than the other. I rotated the canvas then applied distort/ shear. I rotated the canvas back. After that it was airbrush and blur. I then copied/merged a new layer then set the blend mode to soft light to add contast. Not the best work I've posted here but it shows what I think was done to make the original.

Nice one, ronmatt. I especially like the highlight. Go ahead and post a tutorial in quick techniques and tips.

You are the Z-brush master around here. Could the stripe be done it that program also? Just asking out of curiosity while waiting for Omnium_Gatherum to return.

Haven't tried this in Z. I suppose it could be done, I'll give it a go. This one was all PS. Really quite simple Give me a day or two and I'll post a 'how to'.

Thank You all for Your precious time, Your images look really nice.

Ok I've applied the style which Patrick send, and now it looks like this
(I've changed the orientation of the image)

appliedstyle2fb.jpg

I tried to modify the glow and shadow for this layer in blending options but the result is far from looking like Patrick's stripes.

If someone knows what to do now, and has the time to work on it and attach it as a PSD file I would be grateful.

Here is PSD file with the applied style on my shape.

Well, no one's going to do your work for you.

However, if you ask patrick real nice, he could probably point you in the right direction. Learning the basic principles of shading would probably be a good start.

thanks for Your post Moth. I thought that Patrick may post here his tutorial how he made that beautiful stripe, i think that it would be very helpful for many users of the forum - counting me...

i'm trying to do that stripe for about 3 weeks... If anyone of You want to help please pm me.

Sure Omnium, I'll post a quick tut here. I just got back from camping so I will probably post tomorrow.

Ok, here we go.? 8}
I started out with a fresh doc @ 1000 px by 400 px and drew the shape with the pen tool. After that I applied the layer style but it looked different so I scaled the style up a bit till it looked right. (right click on the layer and at the bottom select 'scale effects').? Now time to make the highlight. Make a longated white shape, similar to the example, with the pen tool. Rasterize the layer, apply a guassian blur and set the blend mode to screen. Now for the shadow make another shape (black) just like in the example. I didn't want to have it pure black so I rasterized it and pressed ctrl+u for 'hue and saturation'. Check the colourize box and set the levels accordingly: Hue = 245, Sat = 50, lighness = 15. Finally press ctrl+f to apply the same blur as before and your done! Yay! 8D

Nicely done, p?tr??k.

I do have one additional tip for Omnium-Gatherum. I took a look at your Photoshop file which you linked. It seems to me that you used the pen tool to draw a work path which you then filled with color and then applied the Style which p?tr??k provided. Note that the bevel and emboss effect goes around the edge of the filled color, including the vertical sides.

In the original image there was no effect going down the vertical sides of the stripe. The way around that is to use your Pen Tool and, in the menu bar click on the little icon which changes the function to draw a shape layer. When a style is applied to a shape layer it is applied to the whole shape, even if the path extends outside of the actual image window.

You probably know to look at your shape path or work path in Full Screen mode so you can see the path extending beyond the bounds of the actual image window, so I won't mention that.? ;)
