Pattern Gradient

Ok how would I do a gradient fill with a pattern that goes from Soild to transparent?

To give you one example;

• Create a new layer
• Make a circular selection
• Fill selection with pattern
• Create a layer mask
• CTRL+click on layer mask
• Fill this selection for example with a linear gradient going from white to black[/list:u]
