Illustrator Pattern isn't repeating

Hi, if you want the circles to touch on the pattern you need to set the repeating parameter. Illustrator will always use the bottom layer of the image to create the parameters of the pattern, even if that area is masked off.

Draw a circle with no fill or stroke, exactly the same size as your mask, you can draw this at the top. Then go to Arrange > Send to Back. This will make the new circle the bottom layer. Now select all of the image again & drag to the swatch palette.

Because the bottom layer is now the same size as the mask you created, the circles will touch in the pattern.
