I have a really easy way seeing as most of the time half to three quarters of the planet s going be in shadow.Just make circle selection then take a soft low opacity brush in a blue etc and paint along the selection edge and feather it back bit further as you paint,then grab a smaller and make darker strokes inside your others and blur the whole deal and voila a base to start from as you dont need to paint the right side at all.For the blue atmosphere just convert the selection to a path stroke it with an airbrush and reduce the opacity to suit. :)
