Problem desaturating a color

Hi - The plan is to change the color of a yellow house using CS5
This is what I always do and it always works - but not now.

I have made a new layer with my selection.
I create a layer adjustment Hue/Saturation
I choose custom and master. I slide the saturation level to 0. All colors turn to gray.
I create a clipping mask so I can work with this one layer. When I do this the pale yellow color returns.
When I slide the lightness level to darker it turns brown instead of darker gray. I am unable to change the color of the house to match the color I want.

I have done this many times and this is the first time this has happened to me. I am not familiar using the hue/saturation adjustment tool in any other way.

I have changed the color of other areas of this image with no problem.
What did I do wrong or need to do? thanks!

Corrupt file maybe? IDK. Sometimes PS acts up on me and usually if I close a file or close PS, it's fine. I've only needed to reset my preferences once. I don't like resetting all that stuff. :} If it happens again, maybe use image>adjustments>desaturate.
