PS CS5 exporting huge .jpg/.png images

Have had this problem for some time and seems to be getting worse!

Started a few months ago when I was creating .pngs via "save for web and devices." The image would be 6" in PS, then when I placed the .png it would be huge, 36" or more!

I looked all over the web and forums for a solution couldn't find any (am I the only one that's experienced this??), so I just started exporting my .pngs from Illustrator.

Never had any trouble with .jpgs until this week, now they're doing the same thing. To my knowledge I haven't changed any settings. I'll save a .jpg 12"x12" and when I place it in Illustrator (or PS) it is sized at 52" x 52".

It started doing it last week, I shut down and restarted the program and it sized my .jpgs correctly. Now today it's started with the mega sizes again.

Since I haven't been able to find anything about this problem on the web, I'm suspecting it's a bug -- but I have no idea where to go from here. Since I sell digital products, this obviously isn't working for me. I need PS to work so I can do mine :-/.

details: *I use Photoshop CS5, Windows 7
*PS is saving .pngs and .jpg files larger than the original size
*every now and again it will save the .jpg correctly
*The file size is not any bigger than I would expect it to be, just the finished product

and I'm going nuts! Thanks for any insight, I really, really appreciate it.

Are you trying to make 72 dpi from 300 ? Save to web will save at 72 and if your image was 300.....it will grow if pixel #'s stay the same

I was thinking about that, and that might be the problem with the .png, since I saved for web and devices.

But I can't figure out the .jpg, I'm saving "save as," not for the web -- All of my settings are at 300 dpi, and the pop up box doesn't give me any additional options. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm missing something simple, but I can't seem to find anything else to change.

Thinking the 72 dpi might be a clue though . . just need to figure out why it's doing that.

click on IMAGE....see what the picture tells you...pixels, size, and resolution

300 dpi 3600x3600, so I guess the 72dpi wasn't the issue.

The image placed in PS at the correct size (although I remember having the size problem with PS in the past.)

When I place it in Illustrator, it's suddenly bigger (have checked and rechecked Illustrator settings.) When I export an image from Illustrator and re-import it, the image places at the correct size.
