Question about opening files from a portable hard drive...

My InDesign book says,

"Open document from a local hard drive. When you store a document on a portable drive or a server, it is important to move the document to your local hard drive before opening it. Opening documents from storage media can cause damage."

Is this true? If so, why?

i think it is due to specific way indesign operates,
when you make your work and include content
such as images, pdf or whattever indesign doesn't
include them into document but only the reference
(pointer or the sortcut)to the existing file on the HDD.
so if there is malfunction or connection loss al of your work is gone.
