Removing Text from Background and adding black border around text

I will start by admitting that I'm still "green" when it comes to photoshop, but I've learned a ton in such a short amount of time. But I'm in a huge bind with a customer and I need directions on two items. For some reason or another, I can't seem to find the right "tool" to separate the text, numbers and tattered American flag from the attached logo correctly. I've used the select tool, magic wand tool, etc but it's still not giving me exactly what I need. I feel I'm simply overlooking something that's so basic. 1. I need the text, numbers and tattered American flag from the attached logo with a transparent background first and 2. I need to also add a black outline to the text, numbers and tattered American flag from the attached logo. I'm really sorry for the long-winded note.

Not sure why you're having trouble with the magic wand. I just used it here and the selection seems very clean.
  • I duplicated the background layer and inserted a red color-fill layer in between the two layers as a visual aid to assess the quality of the selection.
  • I used the magic wand—set to a tolerance of 30 and with "contiguous" un-checked—and clicked on a black area of the image.
  • I inverted the selection and clicked the layer mask icon, resulting in the image below.
  • For a transparent image, turn off the visibility of the bottom two layers and keep only the top layer.
  • For a black outline, add a Stroke layer style to the top layer. Select an inside stroke with the thickness of your choice.

Is there anything about the quality of the selection here that is insufficient?

In addition to the Magic Wand Tool, I also tried the "Blend If" sliders in a layer style.
I then created a new blank layer, right clicked on the text layer and hit "merge visible".

This is the result on a greenish bg.......

HI @lomazacreations

Not exactly sure the steps you were using yet try these as options.

- Make sure the magic wand is set to 0 tolerance, anti-alias on and contiguous off
- click on the black near the edges. This should select all the black in the image and leave the content you want alone
- use the keyboard shortcut Cmd+Shift+I to invert the selection
- At the bottom of the Layers panel, there is an icon that is square and circular. If you click that, it converts the selection into a Layer Mask with this result:

From there, you need to put the black line around the objects.
- Double-click on the right side of the Layer in the Layer Panel (to the right of the Layer name (mine is Layer 1). This opens the Layer Styles. Click on the checkbox "Stroke" and click on that option (it will highlight the option), and it will open up the options for the stroke, including color size and many other options. Set those as you want, and you get the result as shown (I set the stroke of this example to 5 pixels and placed it on the outside):

I hope that gives you another direction to consider.

Thank you ALL for your responses. I ended up using "Rich54" directions and it came out exactly as I needed. I was making it much, much more complicated than it needed to be, just as I suspected. Thank you Rich54, IAmSam and thebestcpu for all of your help.

I have one more question on this particular item. As you can see in my image below, there is (should be) a square outline around my working image but also a much larger square outline which the system is making me use to resize the image. How do I remove this larger outline from my file? Again, very green with Photoshop. See below. Can I delete this outline that you can see below without causing issues with my image? It's just odd that I have use this much larger square to resize my much smaller image. Thanks again

Just in case my message wasn't clear, this is what I'm referring to. I need to delete the "outside" lines which is reflected by the red arrow at the bottom of the picture below. The red arrow towards the top of the screen is showing the lines that I need to stay so that I can resize the logo as applicable. Thanks again

@lomazacreations - It's hard to see but do you still have a white line and then a black one? Is this what your client wanted?

ON your onther issue, go to IMAGE > TRIM > TRANSPARENT PIXELS

Yes, the client wanted to keep that white line and then add the black like I did.

As always, thank you so much for your assistance. Now I can finally get them what they want.
