Not sure why you're having trouble with the magic wand. I just used it here and the selection seems very clean.

  • I duplicated the background layer and inserted a red color-fill layer in between the two layers as a visual aid to assess the quality of the selection.
  • I used the magic wand—set to a tolerance of 30 and with "contiguous" un-checked—and clicked on a black area of the image.
  • I inverted the selection and clicked the layer mask icon, resulting in the image below.
  • For a transparent image, turn off the visibility of the bottom two layers and keep only the top layer.
  • For a black outline, add a Stroke layer style to the top layer. Select an inside stroke with the thickness of your choice.


Is there anything about the quality of the selection here that is insufficient?
