Not exactly sure the steps you were using yet try these as options.


- Make sure the magic wand is set to 0 tolerance, anti-alias on and contiguous off

- click on the black near the edges.  This should select all the black in the image and leave the content you want alone

- use the keyboard shortcut Cmd+Shift+I to invert the selection

- At the bottom of the Layers panel, there is an icon that is square and circular.  If you click that, it converts the selection into a Layer Mask with this result:

From there, you need to put the black line around the objects.

- Double-click on the right side of the Layer in the Layer Panel (to the right of the Layer name (mine is Layer 1). This opens the Layer Styles. Click on the checkbox "Stroke" and click on that option (it will highlight the option), and it will open up the options for the stroke, including color size and many other options.  Set those as you want, and you get the result as shown (I set the stroke of this example to 5 pixels and placed it on the outside):
