Everytime I open an image, I get the scratch disk is full error message. My problem is, I don't think I really understand what is going on. I have PLENTY of hard disk space, and Photoshop is the only app running. Can anyone help me???

Thanks, Brian

Hi bdumas... I dont know how much free space you have on your hard drive but if you think its "plenty" then maybe your files have errors due to heavy fragmantation.

you can try running the Check Disk to see if there are any errors.

click on Start -> Run and type cmd

then type chkdsk /F

you'll most likely get something like this
"The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)"

Type Y and hit enter and reboot your computer. the program will automtically scan and fix errors.

after that you might want to run the Disk Defragmenter. ( this might take a couple of hours depending on your drive speed and size.)

Lets see where you are after these steps

I am running windows 98
I have 1 hard drive 80 GB of which I only use 12GB
but I keep getting now a message when I open PS that my scratch disk is almost full - I have never ever done anything with my scratch disk and so I don't understand why this is sudenly happening...... I thought the scratch disk was just a holding place and that it emptied when you close PS :{ I have done a screen shot of my scratch disk and I hope someone can help me with this as I really don't know much about this and need a helping hand

and I often defrag my system and I reboot when I have to during the day as I shut down over night but nothing has changed so why now is my PS doing this and there is another problem that I will ask about later but one problem at a time :{ it is just about the colour settings resetting itself

what is going on ;\ am I loosing it :{
sfm mark couldn't we have a crying face? :(

it helps if I put the image in........... told you all I was loosing it [sleepy]

Thanks mark I only have one hard drive so I will set it to C:/ and let you know how it goes
now if it doesn't work I will need that crying face he he he

Wow sorry to hear your having problems Sue. When I installed PS at the comp I use to work for, I would use the C: as the first scratch disk instead of startup if they had one drive and that generally took care of it. Sometimes I would need to do a search on the temp files on the system and delete them. Windows swap and Pshop scratch would fight and even though they closed out pshop the temp file remained and that caused the error that you are getting. Do a search on your system for temp files and see if you have a bunch of ps scratch files there you didn't know about. The files will be ~PS with some numbers and letters.tmp.

did a search and couldn't find anything but I have opened PS twice now and no error - tomorrow we will see after a reboot

my next question is............ a few times I have opened PS in the last couple of weeks I have had to go back and reset to my monitor gamma, amount of ram I want PS to use and how many recently files to keep under the "opened recently" etc any sugestions guys?
the only thing I have installed recently is the wacom and Adobe Acrobat 5.0

Sounds like your prefs are junked. Have you tried resetting your prefs? G-Man will have some great ideas I am sure....

yep reset and reset and reset.......... started it up this morning and no probs - this is not something that happens every time I open PS just every couple of days over the last couple of weeks ;\ I have my fingers crossed that it doesn't happen again

he he he nice smilie there mark

The only thing I know, is that some versions of the Wacom drivers can cause some problems in Photoshop. Make sure that you have the latest versions of these drivers, at least to rule out that it's Wacom related. :)
