Shadow Under An Object - How to replicate this?

I'd like to create the exact shame shadow as you see right under the Smiley Face.



I have tried it with the elliptical marquee tool + radial gradient as well as with multiple elliptical forms stacked on each other with different colors and playing with the layer style....

Any idea how I can accomplish this?

Instead of starting with an elliptical selection, start with a circular selection, fill it with a radial gradient (on its own layer), and then use the transform tool to change the result into an ellipse.

As I recall, a couple of weeks ago, there was a tutorial on PSG about exactly this technique, but I couldn't immediately find it. Perhaps someone else will remember who posted it and provide a link for you.

I did a couple of simple shadows the other day like this, all I did was use a standard brush on a layer underneath (opacity 78%)

The brush was a soft edge brush with these settings:

Thanks GUYS!! Really Helpful I personally found starting of with a circle and drawing a gradient in there before reshaping had the most accurate result for me. The brush tip was nice as well.
