Showing bone through skin

I have been recently trying to simulate the appearance of rotting flesh or being able to see someones bone through their skin. I've done this with skulls on peoples faces but am having trouble with arms. Any suggestions for making the edges appear burnt around the bone so that it looks decently real?

use dodge and burn tool

create a new layer hold shift and press f5 in the fill option select 50% grey you should now have a new layer in your layers panel. change that blending mode to soft light.
painting with a soft edge brush in black at about 10% opacity paint where you want the burn effect do more strokes the thicker you want it and if you go to far then switch your colour to white and paint over again

I used the burn tool around the edgesBurnt arm.jpg This is what I have so far... As you can see it sticks out and looks unnatural (even though this really ISN'T natural anyway). I'm having trouble making it look as if the bone is under the skin. The effect that I am going for is to make it look like it is inside the arm but visible because of skin being burnt away. (Sounds brutal, I know.)

Sorry that I have not explained enough. First I take the arm layer with the bone layer under it. I then erase part of the arm layer so that the bone is visible. Then I used the burn tool around the edges of the bone, and the upper picture was the result.

Looks pretty good paul, besept you should probably put a small shadow under the bone, to give it more realisim. Very thin, and low opacity.

I purposely left it as is, i did not want to spend the time on it really.
Just showing what can be done with two Googled images and some time.
