Starting Professional Logo Design

Hello, I'm Honky-Tonk (you've probably seen me around). I have recently been looking at some of Inkz's work and I feel that logo design is the best road for me to go down. While I have a good idea of how to create these company brandings, I need some help from you guys.

I have been trying do create some of these and practice, but things just are not turning out the way I would like them to. Here is a question that I have been wondering: should I start from scratch on them, or find a vector and pentool from there? I also need to know if Illustrator would be a nice program to have (I'm guessing so, but I'm not sure, creating vectors and illustrations does not seem like fun I guess.

Please give me your opinion on this issue I'm having. I'm kinda at an intersection in the graphics world at the moment.:azzhat:
 
Honky-tonk,

Generally speaking, I think logos should be vector work - that way the client can re-size at will and not worry about loss of clarity. Illustrator is ideal for that.

Other than that, hit up some tutorials and practice, practice, practice!!!

Best way to learn.

it is no short learning curve using adobe illustrator lol for what is ironically a simple program it sure is hard to master. As for progressing with Logo Design I dont want to be seen as promoting another website but go register as a designer at 99Designs.com and there is literally hundreds of active logo requests on there daily (good money as well) But I doubt your designs will get picked early on but it is brilliant way of learning. They post proper briefs and you can see other designers submissions and see the client interactivity with them you soon get an idea of what the client wants and you will learn a hell of a lot from just looking at all the designs.

But the main thing is to progress is to be honest with yourself get other peoples honest views on your work and dont get disheartened if they dont like it because I know I have spent hours even days on a logo gone to bed thinking yeah this is awesome and then couple of days later I come back to it and hate it. and at least with the above mentioned site they are encouraged to give feedback on every design picked or not so when they are paying you $300+ for it your more likely going to get honest feedback. My advise is just observer for a couple of weeks and dont spam designs those people soon get kicked of the designer team. Pick your submissions wisely and watch the experienced folks show up first.
 
I have to back what the other guys have said here. The more difficult task when it comes to logo/brandmark design is understanding what the logo is truly representing and how it fronts an image for your client, all with the ability to wrap it up in a sweet little graphic. Learning to use the tools is actually the more easy part of it all.
