Text eraser

Hi,

This may have a bad title, I'm not really sure what to call my question lol.

I'm looking for a way to get text (using the text tool) to remove the background that it is being typed onto (although I understand it gets put into its own text layer). I want it to reveal the layer underneath much like you can with brushes and the eraser tool. I've tried typing it, rasterising the layer and then using the magic wand tool to select and delete the text, but the font I'm using doesn't suite that method as it leads to blocky cut outs.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

after rasterizing it make all or sections semi transparent.?

when selecting the text tool you will see there are 4 options Horizontal text, vertical text horizontal text maske vertical text mask either 1 of the last 2 will do what you want.

There are other ways as well for example

you can have layer stack like this to reveal layer 1 via text.
Layer 1
layer 2
text layer
layer 1> right click this duplicated layer 1 in the layers panel and select create clipping mask. This will only show the layer from whatever the layer below consists of which in this case will be text

Thanks, that method didn't give me what I originally wanted (probably because I didn't do it right) however it does give an even better effect

Sounds like you needed to make your text layer a clipping mask. Do you know how to do that?
