after buying a new laptop and using windows 8 for the last day i now love it

i used it a month ago on a freinds and hated it , but having the touchpad set up too go straight too desktop with a three finger tap is great , also accessing the start page by finger slide from right edge is also great

i didnt like the idea of no start menu but i dont think you need it now im getting used too it , the search option is easily accessible on the start page

loving the idea of apps now which i didnt think id want on my laptop

great having a touchscreen laptop as well

any tips or tricks please post , and your thoughts on it

Then what did he convert from Windows to Windows lol:mrgreen:

Get best of both worlds install windows classic shell http://www.classicshell.net/

lets you bring back the old start menu as you know it on previous versions of windows

as for the triple tap to desktop you can make windows load directly into desktop view
http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/windows-and-office/make-windows-8-boot-straight-to-the-desktop/

If your a fan of netflix then install netflix app I use netflix a lot more now because of that app

there are apps out there that let you change the tiles and design your own which is a pretty nifty add on but make sure you delete all the crap tiles the 1s you dont use

If you want to see file explorer, task manager, etc., hover over the start page icon (mine is in lower left corner) and right click. Use the windows key to switch back and forth between the start page and what program you're using. To shut down, when you are on the desktop, use alt/opt +f4.

I don't use any others, but google will get you there, and instructions to replace some old functions can be found, and there are some downloads. I have gotten used to Win 8 and don't need any shortcuts other than those I've listed. In fact that win key gets in my way sometimes when I accidentally hit it! At least you can still get right to the desktop clicking the right lower corner.

I don't have a touchscreen so I can't address that and sure don't benefit from the changes. Far as I'm concerned that other stuff is just junk.

PS - just saw Hoogle's post. Classic Shell was one of the downloads I was mentioning. Best o' luck!

convert from windows 7 too 8 lol , i was thinking of an apple but they are pretty expensive
thanks clare for the tip down the left corner i didnt know that one
set up my touchpad for two finger tap too open menus , so much better then right clicking the touchpad
dont think i need the shell i have seen it before and put it on the laptop i tried a month ago for my cousin
netflix is definitely an app ill be getting
just about too look at the link on start up straight too desktop instead of the start menu
windows key too start page is handy didnt think of that one
shut down is a bit of a pain but the shortcut will be handy

i see media monkey is there as an app ill be trying that one , great program for tagging music , also shazzam if your a music lover , it listens to the music playing from anywhere and tells you what it is and gives you a good right up on it , pretty impressive app to be honest

thanks for the tips ill be off googling more lol
thumbs up though for windows 8 and i didnt think i was going too say that a month ago

egosbar: "just about to look at the link on start up straight to desktop instead of the start menu"

I know I found this one, but for some reason, it just seemed like more steps than I wanted to do. It's been awhile so I don't remember. If it's easy, would you mind outlining it for me?

Or anybody else who's done it already.

Thanks!

lol thought the same too many steps , i can easily start straight too start and three finger tap or click desktop, maybe one day when im bored

I turned on my computer this morning and there was this message from MS to go to the store and get win 8.1. I could not escape the screen except by doing that. I could not escape the store except by accepting the download. Then I was told if I didn't accept the agreement, my previous version would be restored. What's up with that? Anyway, it failed! Fine by me. I don't need a bunch more tiles and aps and I don't like being led around by the nose.

i updated too windows 8.1 if i remember i think it said it failed , but i havent seen the message again and when i look at settings /change pc settings / pc and devices / pc info it shows im running windows 8.1 , have a look and see what version you have running

Tx egosbar. It was supposed to give me the option to opt out, but I guess it doesn't matter much. If I don't need the add ons, I don't really care. As long as it doesn't screw it up. Took me long enough to figure it out as it is, lol; I didn't consider WIN 8 an improvement. Wish I could afford a mac again. Someday . . .

I'm a little disappointed in Windows 8, everything is hard to use. I just bought a laptop that comes with Windoes 8 and I am planning to downgrade to 7 :/

I really agree, but didn't want to go to the trouble if I could adapt to 8. I get around a lot of the extraneous stuff, so the heck with their "upgrades." I'll just keep using it as I always did with an extra keystroke here and there that I would like to shove up their . . . I mean down their throats, lol.

I run my win 8 pretty much like win 7 with classic shell which a free program that adds the start button and it also boots the comp straight to desktop. Otherwise if you get stuck on one of those stupid apps just press the windows key and "d" to get to desktop.

I've upgraded 3 of my comps to 8.1 and one failed but a bios upgrade fixed that. My step fathers hp laptop failed because of the security software so 2 out of 4 comps I know initially failed the upgrade. What does 8.1 do? Classic shell looks a bit spiffier other than that I haven't noticed anything different.
