I would like to turn a colour image into a black and white. I have tried this by going to image > Adjustment and Threshold but I am not sure how to turn certain white bits black. please could someone help me asap. thank you in advance

Hi,
There are many ways to do this. In this TUTORIAL, they will show you many different ways to accomplish this. Notice the eight or so different methods linked on the lower section of this page!

Good Luck!

Couldn't you desaturate as a smart object?

EDIT: Nope, but you can apply a black and white adjustment layer to a smart object, or just as an adjustment layer for that matter.

Are you asking about conversion to greyscale or true black and white. There is a difference you know.

This is a classic case of really muddy communication.

Fishswim, if you read through all the posts, you will see that no one really knows what you are trying to do.

Try to put it clearly. Do you just want a color image in full greyscale ranging from black to white? Do you want a threshold type image with sharp contrast between black and white, no midtones at all? What are you trying to achieve?

If you post some images and maybe examples of what you want to emulate, we can probably help you a lot better.
