How to stop Photoshop CS6 from reverting to previous layer

Hello:
I want to edit on a certain layer, for example layer 1:
My current layer happens to be layer 2, so:
I click on layer 1 to make it current.
I do the editing & it isn't quite what I want, so I undo theaction.
As I undo the action, CS6 also undoes my layer change (i.e makes tolayer 2 current again) even though I want layer 1 to remain the current one.
Is there any way to change this in edit preferences or somewhere?

Thanksfor any help.
Doug D

Are you sure that the action DOESN'T have that "layer change?

Or are you ctrl/alt Z....or history ??? (asking a few different ways)

Hi Doug, I have had this happen many times. The trick, as I believe Mike was going to suggest, is to use the history panel and this should solve your problem. Depending on the state changes, the history panel allows you to select specific state changes while the cmd/cntrl + Z (undo) reverts back to before you made the layer selection.

Yessir, That was my own thought, You might change the number (history)it will save...I think default is 20, I set mine to 60.

Thankyou for the replies...I have tried to respond 2 or 3 times but for some reason my reply is not getting posted. Hopefully it will work this time. Itypically use ctrl/alt Z to undo an edit/action or whatever and I'mnot too familiar with the history panel. However I just tried itwith the history panel and I always get the same result...No matterwhat I try it always reverts to the previous layer selected. I tried doing another search and turned up a thread on another site: Photoshop.com where someone posted a jsx script as a work-around. I would post a link here but I don't think it's allowed for new members. Anyhow, it can be assigned to a shortcut key...even though I don't know anything about these scripts I found some instructions and managed to fumble my way through the process and it seems to work. Once again, thank you for responding to my inquiry. Doug D

Hi Steve: No problem; thanks for letting me know. I don't think that my previous message (the one with jpg images) was all that helpful anyhow. Doug D
