    Resotring a flatened .psd file

I almost didn't click on this message; I knew it was going to be a heartbreaker. I got a panicked phone call from a friend a couple of weeks ago -- same thing.

I just thought I should let y'all know...

I'm so far behind the times, I had no idea what to do. So I went to a local place that builds computers, got on their forum (I'm a big believer in forums. Heh) and told the nice geeks, "spec me a dedicated Photoshop machine." So it's the AMD six core with 8 gigs of RAM and a nice nVidia card...

I just thought I should let y'all know...

My new computer arrived (unexpectedly!) this morning, and now I pretty much TOTALLY RULE!!! Only right that I let you know that, seeing as how I rule and all. RULE! Did I mention that? Of course, I don't have any version of Photoshop on it yet. I'm trying to talk myself into downloading the CS5...

How to recreate an electrifying image

Well, the obvious thing would be to create the glow on its own layer. That would give you maximum ability to play around with it, too. I'd use the lasso tool to make a skewed rectangle shape on a new top layer, fill it with white or very pale blue, gaussian blur the HECK out of it, then play...

How to recreate an electrifying image

Hm. I always go for the less elegant, quick and dirty solution when I can. My temptation would be to build the objects, then flatten the whole picture (save before you flatten!) and use a dodge tool and just scrub it over where you want the glow. Crude, but I'm always in a hurry.

    Old dog seeks new tricks

If you're older than us and riding dirt bikes, you've got no reason to feel old. Geez, I can get a concussion just running the vacuum.

    Old dog seeks new tricks

Yep, we're about the same age, TerryC. I always felt incredibly privileged because I entered the field two years before the company got its first desktop computer. I started (1983) with ink and markers and stat machines and waxed galley and got to see the whole digital revolution unfold. It was...

What's the cheapest (legal!) path to CS5?

They usually justify the high cost of things in Britain by pointing out that everything is more expensive -- gas is more expensive, so moving things around is more expensive, and heating offices is more expensive and paying workers is more expensive...and on and on. I think that theory falls...

What's the cheapest (legal!) path to CS5?

    A thousand bucks worth? Eesh.

How do I create this effect?

Here, I'll break it down in steps. Pick your landscape and start by duplicating the base layer. 1. Make a rectangular marquee in the middle of your working layer 2. Feather the selection (I did 5 pixels). 3. Cut the selection out of the middle 4. Duplicate the layer 5. Take the bottommost of...

How do I create this effect?

I did! My first post in this thread I proposed the method. The second one, I showed the result :)

What's the cheapest (legal!) path to CS5?

Ugh. My current version of Photoshop is CS. Digging around today, it looks like the oldest version allowable for an upgrade is CS2. Swell. So, I'm sure somebody here has done the calculations on the cheapest path to a full Photoshop (and no, there's no way on earth I can call myself a...

How do I create this effect?

Huh. It worked. Now, is it actually something I'll ever want to do?

How do I create this effect?

I think I could reproduce that. Take the landscape and cut a square out of the center. Feather or blur around the edges. Make a copy of that layer, shrink it a little and move it behind the first layer. Lather, rinse, repeat. Looks like a dozen or more layers.

    Old dog seeks new tricks

Many people are better 'Shoppers than I am, but not many have been at it longer. I started with a turnkey image manipulation program called the Autographix Image Capture System in 1987, when Photoshop was just a gleam in Knoll's eye. For 25 years, I did illustration, publications design...
