Hello!

I hate to post here mainly to just ask a question, but I've searched around the web off and on for days trying to figure this out! Normally I can on my own (eventually) but it's not happening, lol.

Anyway, I'm using Photoshop CS5 and I'm trying to get a gray-transparent background on my text like the image below for example.

If anyone could help with this, I would really appreciate it! Thanks! :)

View attachment Untitled-1.psdJust use the square marquee tool to create the box around the text on a new layer select the gradient tool set the colours to grey - transparant and draw the gradient inside the marquee box.

In the example you link to the strip of grey to black (Gradient) behind the text was simply done by placing it on it's own layer.

So starting at the bottom of the layers palette you would have...

The main image
The grey strip
Your chosen text

Note: The grey strip layers opacity has been lowered to the desired level.

HOW TO DO IT:
1. Open the main image that requires the text on it.
2. Make a new blank layer and colour it grey.
3. Using the rectangular marque tool make a selection (The strip) the size you desire.
4. With the selection still live, hit Ctrl + J to put the strip on it's own layer.
5. Turn off the grey blank layer (Click the eye).
6. Lower the opacity of the strip layer to whatever you like.
7. Type your text and move it onto the grey translucent strip.

At least that's how I'd do it...

Hope this helps you out.

Sorry guys....you posted while I was still typing..

That always happens to me...Lol
