How to create the effect of depth in photoshop

Now that I have "mastered" the method(s) that everyone has told me [thanks for that too!] I would like directions on how to create depth, such as pits etc. in a photo. I have done so previous to this msg but would like to "perfect" the method. I am certain someone out there has the right way. The enclosed attachment will give you an idea where I want to place the effect.

are you referring to Shadows and highlights? the image is so poor to work with to grab any detail but I think you may be able to give it dimension using

Been there, done that but will try to adjust further. How about vanishing point?
