I have looked alllll over the web for anything that might help me solve the problem I'm having but to date I have not found anything like what I'm experiencing. I have Photoshop CS5 Extended. Every time I try and use layer styles patterns specifically my photoshop hangs, then crashes. I've use Win7 64 bit I've got 8gb ram, and a GTX Gforce 580 graphics card. I don't understand what's happening. I've set my preferences to the largest scratch disk, I've increased the cache memory. I'm just lost on what could be causing it. Any help anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

See if resetting your preferences file helps, it fixes a lot of strange problems in Photoshop.
Start Photoshop and immediately hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows)
or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS X).

Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"
Try unchecking Enable OpenGL Drawing in Edit|Preferences|Performance

Also, make sure you video driver is up to date.

Yes I tried that. I did a clean install of the latest driver, reset the preferences, unchecked GL. Still crashes as soon as I try and put a pattern to a layer. I'm going crazy trying to figure out what causes this. I've had other problems before with Photoshop but I've always found a solution. This time I haven't.

Actually to be more precise it crashes when I try and scale the size of the pattern. Not sure that helps but thought I might clarify that.
