Photoshop CS5 (Mac) crashes when trying to open or create new files.

This has happened to me many, many times in the past.

Each time it was due to hard drive failure.

This is a caution to you: back up your data, immediately. It may not be hard drive failure, but just in case it is, back your stuff up.

It will go on for a while yet, until it becomes worse and then you're going to get into all kinds of trouble with your hard drive and retrieving your data. It's a slow decline, and you're going to see it get worse, so heed this warning - I have learned the very hard way, trust me. I've lost plenty of data over the years due to this problem, so now I back up often. I have several hard drives sitting on my shelf of back ups, so I have piece of mind.

Again it might not be the problem but it always was for me.

It may be a corrupt preferences file but I agree with Smokey2011 back up those files just to be sure then try this.

Start Photoshop and immediately hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift (Windows)
or Command+Option+Shift (Mac OS X).

Then, click Yes to the message, "Delete the Adobe Photoshop Settings file?"

This will reset your preferences to their default settings.
