...and finished my work with this image.

Nice exercise Chris.
I assume the background wasn't a 3D object (postcard)? I can see a gradient.
Just one issue, the shadow is to blurry since the object a quite close to the ground plane. (in my eyes)
I would try a shadow softness between 15 à 20 % in 'environment' and the same in 'infinite light'.

The background and the shadows are postwork and can easily be changed.
I had a version with harder shadows like you're suggesting, though I didn't like it, it made the image even more busy as it is now.

I had to take another look to see that the upper objects weren't casting shadows on the objects below.

I'm not gonna call you 'Mr.Soft Shadow' because its one step away from 'softie'.
