PS and Intuos Pen & Touch Small Tablet

I recently purchased the small Wacom Intuos Pen & Touch Tablet, and I was wondering what would be a good setup as far as the buttons on the tablet and the pen for use in PS. I know it's all going to be personal choice, but since I'm still (sorta)new to PS, and definitely new to the tablet game, I was hoping someone could suggest a few shortcuts I could map to the tablet. Up until about 2 weeks ago, I only ever really used ACR to do minor edits, but have discovered that I may like doing actual retouching on my photos, so I've been experimenting and trying to learn how to use PS. I've done a couple of "multi selfies"(I don't know how else to call them), where I lock the camera down and lock exposure, and take a few images of myself and combine them all together, and was using the mouse to put them all together. Now that I've got the tablet I want to try doing more of them, but I'm curious as to what shortcuts I should map to it. I'm doing an online PS course as well, so I will start learning more about how to use PS properly, and I know the tablet is going to make life a lot easier. But I have no clue what I should program my tablet to do. For the most part, it's all default settings right now, so any suggestions would be great.

And sorry if this post doesn't make a lot of sense, I'm going on little to no sleep the past few days, so I'm not entirely sure what I'm typing right now! Hopefully I get some helpful tips from you guys and can come back when I'm not so tired and hopefully make sense of it all. Thanks in advance for any help provided.

Hey RBT, I set my Wacom up to use the the option key, the X key, Touch on and off, and Step Backwards ( F hotkey for option+command+Z) for the tablet

On the Pen, lower - pan/scroll and upper - Pop-up menu.

Thanks IamSam. Option key, is that Alt on PC? I think it is, but can't remember at the moment. And I didn't know you could map one of the buttons to turning touch on/off. I thought that was just the switch at the top of the tablet? I'll have to try it out. I'm sure it's going to take a lot of trial and error, especially considering I'm still so new to Photoshop, so I don't even really know at this point what tools I'll be using the most. I currently only shoot landscapes, long exposure, nature, those kinds of things, no people at the moment, so again, not sure which tools I'll end up using all the time. And with the layout of my desk as well, it's almost easier to just use my keyboard for shortcut keys, instead of the buttons on the tablet. But I'm hoping to sort that out at some point as well, hopefully make more room on my desk. Still trying to find a comfortable setup, with both the tablet and my laptop as a whole. I recently moved into a new place and have an actual desk to use now, so it's taking me some time to figure out how to set it all up to work comfortably.

I'd appreciate any other input as well from other members on here, so hopefully I get some more responses. And does anyone happen to know of any good tablet and PS tutorials either on YouTube, or anywhere else online? I can't seem to find too many tutorials for both, and those that I do find are mostly for the Pro tablets, and I'm not entirely certain if those would be relevant to me, as I only have the Pen & Touch small tablet.

General settings in PS for use with a Intuos Tablet

Was just curious if there are any settings I should change in PS preferences now that I have an Intuos tablet, instead of using a mouse. I'm still pretty new to PS in general, but I'm definitely new to using a tablet. I'm just wondering basically if there are any settings that I absolutely should or must change when switching over to using a tablet?

And yes, I have another topic about tablet use in PS, but I figured these are two different subjects essentially, so I figured it would be okay to start a new thread. Hope that's okay.

Re: General settings in PS for use with a Intuos Tablet

To answer your second question.........no. No changes in preferences are really needed for the tablet.

I like the option, X, touch, and duplicate layer...My stylus is set for x and right click

Lots of tuts for Wacom on you tube

When you say "touch" do you mean you set one of the buttons to disable touch? Cuz my small tablet has a toggle switch at the top to turn touch on and off. And yeah, there are a lot of Wacom tablet tutorials on YouTube, but not many for the Small Intuos Pen & Touch tablet. They're mostly for the larger pro tablets, which have more buttons and better pressure sensitivity. I haven't really found many videos for my specific tablet. But, I guess I'll just learn through trial and error. With how my workstation is setup, most of the time it's quicker for myself to just use the keyboard instead of the tablet keys, so I may just end up sticking with that.

Thanks again for the replies, and thanks for merging the two threads together.

Decide which actions you use most often in PS and set it accordingly. For instance inverting a selection is something you will often need, so that might be one to set. Bear in mind that you can have more than one set of button assignments. Use the backup utility to save different setups for different types of editing.
